Volkswagen presented Mission Efficiency as a near-production electric car and reported three world records. The concept reached a drag coefficient of 0.158, while a separate ideal-trip measurement recorded consumption of 6.48 kWh per 100 kilometres.
On a documented 1,278.36-kilometre route from Volkswagen’s development centre in Wolfsburg to Vienna, the car achieved 7.51 kWh per 100 kilometres including charging losses; without those losses, Volkswagen reports 6.89 kWh per 100 kilometres. The project uses the front-wheel-drive MEB+ architecture, ID-family production technology and a solar roof for onboard systems.
The wider lesson matters more than the record itself. Future affordable EVs can gain range through body shape, underbody treatment, wheel design, weight and auxiliary energy use — improvements that can be carried into everyday models.
